CAPE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS HONORS AN ARTIST, CORPORATION AND TRUSTEE
by Burt Albert, Series Developer, "Tuesdays with the Muse"
At its annual Giving Thanks Dinner the Cape Museum of Fine Arts recently honored a Provincetown artist, a Chatham-based corporation and a museum trustee from Bass River. Haynes Ownby, the artist, was a student of Hans Hofmann, a famous teacher and abstract expressionist whose color theories Ownby still promulgates.
Ownby was honored not only for his appearances in the "Tuesday with the Muse" series but especially for his curatorial work on the 1999 exhibition featuring many who studied with Hofmann. As a result of that showing, the museum acquired 16 new works for its permanent collection, including those of Robert DiNiro, Sr., Virginia Admiral, Jo Sandman, John Grillo and others.
The Wequasett Inn on Pleasant Bay in Chatham received kudos for "generously hosting a number of CMFA fundraising events," said Gregory F. Harper, museum director. The corporation has also sponsored exhibits since 1993 and was involved in donations for the Hope McClennen Gallery.
Owners Mark and Christine Novata have served as CMFA trustees since 1995.
Charlotte Benner, also a trustee since 1995, was cited for her steadfast commitment to and leadership of the Secret Garden Tour, "an event that has been a sellout every year since Benner began working on it in 1993," Harper said.
The Bass River resident and garden expert was also among the first to champion the CMFA's Crossroad Campaign when, in 1996, Harper added, "Charlotte quickly offered her support and enthusiasm that set the tone of involvement from the beginning."
The museum is located on the campus of the Playhouse Center for the Arts in Dennis Village. It was recently named "a star museum" by The New York Times. In February it will open its new $1.5 million addition.
