BLANCHE LAZZELL: From Paris to Provincetown
By David Acton, Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs Worcester Art Museum

David Acton, Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs Worcester Art Museum

In the early years of World War I, a group of artists working at Provincetown on Cape Cod developed a new, simplified woodcut printmaking technique. Bright hues, simple designs, and a handmade quality characterize these charming prints. An annual summer visitor from West Virginia, Blanche Lazzell adopted the medium and made it her own. She employed the medium for local views, floral still lifes, and Cubist abstractions as well. This talk will explore the development of the single-block-white-line woodcut, and how Lazzell’s distinctive technique, her extensive body of work, and her activities as a teacher made her the quintessential Provincetown printmaker.
