THE NEW YORK TIMES HAILS CAPE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

"Among the banquet of star museums offered by the culture-conscious state of Massachusetts…." is the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, says Grace Glueck in today’s issue of The New York Times [September 8, 2000, page B33].

In a full-page feature about five "small museums [that] yield big rewards" the Times art critic outlines the history of the Dennis-based institution and cites famous artists represented in the museum’s collection "of more than 1,000 objects [that] illustrates the role the Cape has taken in American art since 1899."

Glueck also refers to works by three standouts (Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell and Arshile Gorky) in the current exhibit on "Surrealism in America During the 1930’s and 1940’s: Selections from the Penny and Elton Yasuna Collection," which she hails as "an impressive assemblage." She also highlights the expansion to the museum and its "major gallery, a bright white space whose handsome wooden truss roof resembles the hull of a boat."
