TV PIONEERS IN SPOTLIGHT AT CAPE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
by
Burt Albert, Series Developer, "Tuesdays with the Muse"

Two pioneers in network television will take the spotlight at the December 5 program in the "Tuesdays with the Muse series" at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts.

Arthur Kane (CBS) and Joseph Ryan (NBC) will talk about "TV - The REAL Way It Was!"

In announcing the program, museum director Gregory F. Harper said, "Each man has a rich repertoire of anecdotes, photographs and video clips about the days when America was first riveted by the medium. So we’re looking forward to presentations that will be not only informative but entertaining."

Kane, often dubbed "Mr. Emmys International," served as executive director of the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

His production credits include "60 Minutes," "The CBS Evening News," papal coronations, royal weddings and state funerals.

Kane, a Barnstable resident, will talk mainly about network news.

At CBS he was responsible for coverage of space shots, national political campaigns and the three networks’ joint coverage of the JFK funeral, for which he was accorded wide industry acclaim.

Ryan, who lives in Harwich, will talk about the entertainment side of the medium.

Writing for the "Today" show from 1952 to 1958, he worked with Dave Garroway, Jack Lescoulie, Frank Blair, Lee Ann Meriwether, Helen O'Connell and J. Fred Muggs plus such guests as Pearl Buck, Louis Armstrong, Harry and Margaret Truman, Robert Frost and scores more.

In 1956 Ryan was also at the forefront of remote, live telecasts from cities of all sizes across the country. One such event resulted in a classic starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Years later Ryan helped put WCVB-TV5/Boston on the air. The New York Times hailed it as "perhaps the best TV station in the country."

From 1986 through 1992 he built, owned and operated WFCC-FM, Cape Cod’s classical radio station.

Admission to the 7PM program is $5 members, $8 others. The museum is located on the campus of the Cape Playhouse Center for the Arts, Route 6A, Dennis. The series sponsor is Contrast Bistro.
