PHOTOS GIVE UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF CAPE COD SHORES
by Burt Albert, Series Developer, "Tuesdays with the Muse"
In a program called "C-Scapes and Aerial Abstracts" photographers Paul A. Andrews and Deirdre Portnoy will show unique images of Cape Cod Shores during their presentation on Tuesday, February 20, 7PM, at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts. The program is part of the "Tuesdays with the Muse Series."
Andrews, formerly a jet fighter with the United States Air Force and researcher at Polaroid Corporation, started taking photos at 16.
Although adept at handling F-80s, F-84s and F-86s, he prefers to have Charles Rose pilot him out of Falmouth Airport so Andrews can maneuver his equipment easily. "It’s amazing how many ponds there are on the Cape," Andrews said. "You don’t see them from the road."
He shoots mainly at 1,000 to 1500 feet over land, adhering to FAA regulations. Over water he gets as low as 500 feet. Among his collection of 14,000 slides of the Cape and Islands, some of his most spectacular have been shot from a hovering helicopter--a too expensive route he eventually had to abandon.
With degrees in chemistry from Northeastern, the former Belmont resident is president of Aerial Photo of Cape Cod and lives in Falmouth.
Portnoy, a Wellfleet resident, received her bachelor’s degree from Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas. She has also done graduate work at UMass/Dartmouth, Radcliffe and Rhode Island School of Design. Besides 13 group shows, she has also had three solo exhibitions.
Portnoy’s striking black-and-white images are captured during "artistic-ecological journeys" of the mapping project at the c-shape dune shack in the Cape Cod National Seashore Park.
The project inspires artists to create and bring back to their communities "works that reflect interaction with fragile and unique environments." Each project results from "living in the wild" and using the park’s global positioning satellite system "to create new forms of landscape art."
The Cape Museum of Fine Arts is on the campus of the Cape Playhouse Center for the Arts, Route 6A, Dennis Village. Admission is $6.50 for members with a CMFA Art Discovery Card. Regular admission is $10 for members, $12 for others.
Celebrating its 20th year and now completing its $1.5 million addition, the CMFA was recently hailed "a star museum" by The New York Times. Its charter is to "collect, conserve, study, interpret and exhibit works primarily by the outstanding artists associated with Cape Cod and the Islands."
