Cape Cod's answer to the 17th century Dutch painter, Jan Vermeer, will be the featured speaker at the next Tuesdays with the Muse program, December 4th, 7pm, Cape Museum of Fine Arts, Dennis.

In talk on "Mastering Light and Shade", Robert Roark will discuss a number of his paintings currently on exhibit at the museum.

Like Vermeer, whose works drew blockbuster crowds at the National Gallery of Art a few years ago, Roark creates

landscapes and portraits that "invite tactile exploration".

A Brewster resident, Roark hails from Mississippi, and was educated at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design, and the Cape Cod School of Art under the noted tutelage of William Draper, Daniel Greene, and Henry Hensche.

Among the numerous rewards, he is the recipient of a Ford Foundation Scholarship and the Kunyoski Memorial Scholarship as well as the many awards with pastels. His miniature oil paintings 5" x 7" and smaller have won Mr. Roark as many as five national awards in a year, and his nudes and portraits have garnered wide national and international recognition.

In 1996, he was asked to jury the Copley Society's Group Show and has taken part in fund-raising activities with them. Roark will be the featured artist for the celebrated "Pops in the Park" event held each year in Hyannis with the Boston Pops orchestra to raise funds for the Cape Cod Arts Foundation.

While in New York, he worked as a portrait painter and illustrator for such periodicals as the New York Times as well as a mural painter for the Hotel Pierre in New York and the Pierre Cardin Resorts in Palm Springs. He has been the subject of recent articles in Cape Cod Life as has been the featured artist for the Cape Cod Times as well as Cape Cod Antiques and Arts Magazine.

In 1987, he had his first one-man show at Tree's Place and continued to hold shows there until he and his wife, Anita Winstanley-Roark, opened their own gallery, Winstanley-Roark Fine Arts, in 1995.

Widely exhibited, Mr. Roark's art work can be found in many private and corporate collections worldwide.

Describing his work, Mr. Roark has said that he paints in a "simple and straightforward manner, choosing to define the landscape and other subjects in terms of light as opposed to color".

His approach transports the view into a beautiful world of varied subjects and entices one to linger and explore the radiant textures and evocative light.

Through his numerous subjects, Mr Roark has laid claim to an exquisite corner of the present Age of Enlightenment by creating mirror images of the passion which resides within him.

He is one of the few artists who can electrify and endow his work with his own excitement so that it relays itself to the quickly inspired, passer-by.

The emotions conveyed through Robert K. Roark's paintings are contagious and we surrender willingly to the call.

Admission is $6.50 for members with a CMFA Art Discovery Card, Regular admission has now been reduced to $8 for members, $10 for others.
