ART TALKS

ART AND POLITICS
by
Debbie Crockett-Rice, Series Developer, "Tuesdays with the Muse"

Suzanne Kuffler, a video artist and Philip Yenawine, a former Director of Education at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, will explore how the artist connects with the political world in the next "Tuesdays with the Muse" program, 7PM, at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, Dennis.

They will discuss the rights and the needs of the artist in bringing their work to the public and the fragility of the human spirit as depicted in these works.

SUZANNE KUFFLER: of Woods Hole, goes back and forth in her video projects between artistic concerns and social/political issues. Her art roots began in the early 70's amidst the post studio art movement and has given voice for this type of mixed content.

She is intrigued by what she calls "common humanity". Her current work focuses on that concept through the themes of vulnerability, escape, and the silence associated with trauma.

Her most recent video called "Involuntary Isolation" focuses on the incredible numbers of those "missing" from several population ratios where women should outnumber men but do not and addresses insufficient nutrition and lack of access to medical services.

She strives to capture the emotional impact of circumstances through the abstraction of artistic images and gives voice to the silence of oppression while expanding the concept of a shared humanity.

PHILIP YENAWINE: has been involved with many efforts which support the rights and needs of artists, including ArtMatters (a foundation that provides fellowships to visual artists) and Visual AIDS .

He is currently the co-director of Visual Understanding in Education (VUE), a nonprofit organization that conducts research in developmentally-based education specifically intending to foster cognitive growth through interaction with art which is used in museums and schools.

Prior to founding VUE, he was Director of Education at the Museum of Modern Art for almost a decade. After that, he accepted a one-year position as Visiting Professor at the Mass College or Art as well as a Visiting Curator at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Boston.

As an author, he has written six books about modern art for children and two books for adults addressing the questions and interests of beginning viewers entitled HOW TO LOOK AT MODERN ART and KEY ART TERMS FOR BEGINNERS.

Admission is $6.50 for members with a CMFA Art Discovery Card, Regular admission has now been reduced to $8 for members, $10 for others.
