WHIMSY, WIRE, AND WHIRLIGIG: A 'CIRCUS' AT THE CMFA
by Deborah Crockett-Rice, Series Developer, "Tuesdays with the Muse"

A virtual circus of delightful art forms--from mobiles to metallic bugs--will be spotlighted on October 9th at 7PM in the Tuesdays with the Muse series at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts in Dennis.

Called "Whimsy, Wire and Whirlagig, the entertaining and informative program will feature the works and words of five outstanding area artists.

Arthur Bauman, a Harwich resident, began working with mobiles while stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan. Inspired by two films on Alexander Calder, Baumann began in his leisure time with materials on-hand. His work graduated to exhibitions worldwide.

Currently, his mobiles can be seen at the Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet, which houses his most extensive works. Although indebted to Calder, He has developed his own voice. He describes his moving art as "a dance in time".

Alfie Glover, whose reverence for nature is evident in his work, is a beachcomber whose findings get recycled into magical pieces. Fish nets, mops, street sweeper brushes, among other objects, find their way into lamps and tables and such.

All materials are fodder for Glover's pieces, and as a sculptor, painter, and recycler, the Catumet artist extends the boundaries of folk art by infusing it with a sense of humor.

Betty Gurrier, a quilter from Yarmouthport, discovered her art through a stitchery seminar. From that course, inspiration led her to her soft figures and quilts.

Her background of art history in college and courses in silk screening,  ceramics and enameling, fueled her ability to work with light in her fabrics.  Like a sculptor, she works with light and shades her quilts and off-white fabric pieces. "I enjoy the interplay between texture and form", she says.

In the late 80s, Gurrier began designing one-of-a-kind wall hangings in a riot of colors. Her work is displayed countrywide in a number of permanent collections.

Hugh Price, a folk artist who makes whirligigs, originally hails from New York.  Having been a freelance illustrator and graphic designer the past forty years, primarily in the education field, print and TV, Price has developed a keen eye for his whirligigs.

He has exhibited in the Northeastern United States, and is a member of the New England Watercolor Society. Not only does he create these magical pieces of folk art, but he is also works with watercolor and illustration. He lives in Orleans.

Moe Van Dereck of Provincetown is a renaissance man. Besides being a sculptor, he is a builder, volunteer fireman, musician, beachcomber and dump-picker.  His sculptures mirror his essence.....funky, whimsical, and not quite what they appear. His wide-ranging curiosity encompasses an appreciation for "cleverness of times past".

His life-like sculptures of bugs and animals carry whimsical names, like......."Eastern Scissortail", "Texas Six Step" (spiders) and "Dinner on the Fly" (lizard).

Van Dereck exhibits locally and nationally.

Admission is $6.50 for members with a CMFA Art Discovery Card.  Regular admission is $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers..
