MUSEUM PROGRAM FEATURES VINEYARD AND NANTUCKET ARTISTS
by Deborah Crockett-Rice, Series Developer, "Tuesdays with the Muse"

The Islands meet the Mainland! For the first time at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, a program devoted solely to artists from Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard will open the fall season of the "Tuesdays with the Muse" series, September 11th, 7pm.

Called "Ferry and Tarry There: Art on the Islands", the program will give a rare glimpse into the nearby art scenes. Four featured speakers will show their own works.

Susan Button, a ceramist who studied at Radcliffe College with Master Potter, Makoto Yabe, will present a series of raku vessels called "Seedlings" and the "Ripple" series of bowls and platters.

The pieces were inspired by walks in the woods and along the coastline of Martha's Vineyard.

Button's exploration of her relationship to nature has led her further into the landscape. She has recently been focusing on transforming the organic form of a flower into utilitarian objects and sculptural birdbaths.

Elizabeth Lockhart Taft, a landscape painter with an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, looks to Corot, Charles Burchfield, Fairfield Porter and others to "help build a foundation" for her abstract-like pieces.

These landscapes in oil have bold shapes that embrace the Martha's Vineyard scenery. She paints en plein air and every spring spends her days outside, "capturing the land, the sky, the water, and the world reborn....all the seasonal changes".

Allen Whiting, whose large bucolic landscapes of his ancestral farmland are in collections worldwide, is a native of Martha's Vineyard with roots which date back to colonial times. He has found inspiration in the island's natural beauty and " clarity of light".

Farm life immersed him in the landscape and inspired him to pursue his skills as a painter. He now combines both and considers himself fortunate. His patrons number far and wide.

Bobby Frazier, while working in oils, acrylics, and printmaking, keeps his finger on the pulse of Nantucket art.

He is President of the Artist's Association of Nantucket and since 1993, has written over 150 installments of the "Artsbuzz" column for Yesterday's Island, covering local, contemporary art.

Besides publishing more than fifty stories and eight collections of poetry, Frazier is a three-time winner of the Rhysling Award for Poetry.

The Museum is on the campus of the Cape Playhouse Center for the Arts, Route 6A, Dennis Village.

Admission is $6.50 for members with a CMFA Art Discovery Card, Regular admission is $10 for members, $12 for others.
