ART TALKS
E/MOTIONS: IN DANCE, IN SCULPTURE
by Debbie Crockett-Rice, Series Developer, "Tuesdays with the Muse"
An exciting trio of women artists are back for an encore! HEATHER BLUME, of Sandwich, is a widely acclaimed artist whose work is currently on display in the museum's Polhemus/Savery Gallery in an exhibition entitled "Fortunata Circus". This work is a result of much inspiration, artistry and research involving the circus, legends of Fortunata, gypsies and archetypes of Western culture. Fortunata, the central figure of this exhibit, represents the multifaceted and often capricious nature of existence.
Her mixed media figurative sculptures are highly original art forms in which "metaphor, mystery, and metamorphosis are the defining them.
A native of Cape Cod, Ms. Blume holds a BFA , summa cum laude in Painting and an MFA cum laude in Sculpture from the New York Academy of Art in New York City. Her work has been featured in exhibitions nationwide and also internationally.
She is the recipient of numerous awards, scholarships, and grants and most recently has had her work included in the permanent collection of the British Museum.
Locally her works can be viewed year round at the Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet or Orleans.
CATHY BATCHELLER, of Chatham, has a long association with the fine art of dance. She has performed in the position of prima ballerina with such diverse ballet companies as the Birmingham Royal Ballet in England, the Stuttgart Ballet in Stuttgart, Germany, and the San Francisco Ballet nationally.
Her classical repertoire include Swan Lake, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, and the Nutcracker and wide range of works by such notable choreographers as Balanchine, Robbins, Kylian, Ashton, Bintley and Smuin.
Her TV appearances include leading roles in productions of Cinderella and Giselle.
She has gravitated increasingly towards Cape Cod, and spend most of her time here as a co-director with her husband, Joseph Cipolla, of their dance company called Transfiguration formerly known as the Washashore Dance Ensemble.
JOANNE CALLUM POWERS, of Brewster, is a dancer, choreographer, and director of dance at Cape Cod Community College. She has performed and choreographed for the stage for over 20 years.
Among her TV appearances, she performed in the PBS series "Alive from Off Center" directed by the noted John Sayles. Her educational credits include a degree in Expressive Arts, and she is a Laban Movement Analyst.
Her teaching expertise lies in dance composition and the creative process. This is evidenced in her courses at Cape Cod Community College and dance improvisation for women of all ages entitled "Wild Women".
Presently she serves as a team manager for Destination and Imagination in the Brewster school system, a program in creativity and learning through multiple intelligence.
These three gifted women artists will create magic in movement and encourage audience participation in this evening's performance blending the art of dance and sculpture.
Tuesdays with the Muse programs at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, Route 6A, Dennis, Ma.
Admission: $8.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members.
