LAND OF THE FREE, HOME OF THE BRAVE: Cape Artists Respond to Patriotic Theme
by Cindy Nickerson, Director, Cahoon Museum of American Art
No sooner did a wave of sadness sweep across the United States following the Sept. 11 attacks than a surge of patriotism followed. In recognition of this deeper appreciation for our country and its values, the Cahoon Museum of American Art invited 31 Cape artists to create works for Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, an exhibition/sale on view from Feb.1 through March 9 at the museum.
An opening reception featuring patriotic music by pianist Gloria Lariviere will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Refreshments will be served.
All of the works in the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave exhibit will be for sale. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds will benefit the September 11th Fund, which was established by United Way of New York City and the New York Community Trust. The fund is an umbrella organization that is dispersing monies to a number of other nonprofits that are directly helping people affected by the World Trade Center disaster.
One of the show’s participants, Loretta Feeney, had a painting of New York City in progress on her easel on Sept. 11. As it included the World Trade Center towers, the scene was quite difficult for her to finish, but she made the effort because it seemed so appropriate for the exhibit.
Susan O’Brien McLean turned the Land of the Free … theme into an opportunity to pay homage to a dear friend of her daughter’s who died in the attack on the World Trade Center. Bobby Coll, a vice president of a brokerage firm, was trying to help others escape from the second tower when it collapsed. McLean’s painting of an American flag draped over an Adirondack chair is titled "Home of the Brave."
William Adelman pays tribute to the birth of our democratic way of life with "The American Revolution," a triptych picturing real objects in an imaginary arrangement and setting. The painting brings together such icons of the Revolution as the Declaration of Independence, a Paul Revere candlestick, a Betsy Ross flag, George Washington’s original Purple Heart and Rembrandt Peale’s portrait of Thomas Jefferson.
Jane Lincoln, an artist best-known for her impressionist landscapes, found that painting abstractly helped her deal with her grief over the events of Sept. 11. The colors red, white and blue predominate in her small work "America Aches." Of course, many realistic landscapes and still lifes in the exhibit also reflect the profusion of American flags that have brightened our land hearts since Sept. 11. Among such scenes are a painting of New Bedford by Susan Baker, a painting of a Nantucket cottage by Samir Barber and a photograph of a Wellfleet house by Carmen Circero.
Other artists represented in Land of the Free, Home of the Brave are Betsy Bennett, Anne Boucher, William R. Davis, Walter Dorrell, Betty Carroll Fuller, Jack Garver, Jack Goldsmith, Christopher Green, Lois Griffel, Elspeth Halvorsen, Thomas Higham, Marieluise Hutchinson, Marjorie Keary, Roger P. Levin, Robert McDonald, Carol Odell, Suzanne M. Packer, Robert K. Roark, Rosebee, Jayne Shelley-Pierce, Charles Sovek, Christie Velesig, Tony Vevers and Joyce Zavorskas.
