ART TALKS

STOBART AND McGURL TO GIVE FIRST OF MASTER CLASSES
by Greg Harper, Executive Director and Curator of the Cape Museum of Fine Arts

John Stobart and Joseph McGurl, two of the most prominent maritime painters in the United States, will hold the first of the master classes for artists at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, June 19-22.  Each session will run from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

Called "Draughtsmanship and Research for the Maritime Artist," the course, will deal mainly with the generation of ideas, less with technique. Although there will be a portion of time spent on drawing from life.  Students will learn how to research maritime subjects and how to render and reorient the documentary images for compositional purposes.

Stobart is perhaps the premiere painter of the American harbor scene in the days of the great clipper ship. The English-born son of a pharmacist, he is known for the quality control he exercises over his work.  The evidence of such lies, says Harper, in 75 of the master's paintings featured in E. P. Dutton's outstanding book about him called "Stobart: The Rediscovery of America's Maritime Heritage."

Jospeh McGurl received his most influential instruction from his father, a well-known muralist.  The younger McGurl's work relates to the 19th-century luminist painters but with a modern approach to style and subject.  The process of the former yacht captain relies on sketches, reinterpreted memory and imagination.

The museum is on the campus of the Cape Playhouse Center for the Arts, Route 6A, Dennis, where the 100 pieces currently displayed in the 12th National Exhibition of the

American Society of Marine Artists provide an appropriate complement to the Stobart/McGurl class.

The two other offerings in the series are "Mining the Subject" (July 10 - 13) with Jan Collins Selman and "The Artist's Book" (August 7 -10) with Ann Gillen.
